World Cup (golf, men)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The World Cup is a professional golf tournament for national two-man teams. Only one team per nation is allowed to start. The players are selected - if available - according to the best ranking in the world rankings . Since 2013 the competition has been called ISPS Handa World Cup of Golf .

mode

The tournament was held from 1954 to 1999 on four days as a counting game over 18 holes each and then the individual results of the two players were added. There was also an award for the best single player in the entire field.

From 2000 to 2011, the four days played alternately in the foursome (the two players of the team take turns hitting the ball) and in the fourball format (the two players play in parallel, the score of the better player per hole is counted).

In 2013 the competition was mainly an individual competition with a team character. The field of 60 players was based on the golf world ranking, whereby up to two players per country could qualify (up to four if within the top 15 of the world ranking). The format was a 72-hole stroke play with individual scoring for 7 million of the total of $ 8 million in prize money. For the first time, points were also awarded for the world rankings. The results of the two top-ranked players from each country were included in the team ranking.

History and Outlook

The event has existed since 1953 and was originally called the Canada Cup since it was founded by Canadian industrialist John Jay Hopkins. The name World Cup has been used since 1967 . From 2000 to 2006 he was part of the highly endowed World Golf Championships tournament series. Always prestigious, the list of winners read mostly like a who's who in professional golf until 2001. As a result of the busy schedule of the absolute world-class golfers - despite the high prize money - more and more absences of these golf greats have been recorded in recent years. In addition, the World Cup will be held after the end of the season of the two major tours and - although recognized as an event by the PGA Tour and the European Tour - no longer counts towards their money list.

From 2007 to 2009, the Omega Mission Hills World Cup was held in China at the Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen . It was then decided to hold the event under the same name only every two years. The venue in 2011 was the Mission Hills Resort Hainan in the Chinese province of Hainan .
