David Robert Duval (born November 9, 1971 in Jacksonville , Florida ) is an American professional golfer on the PGA Tour . He belongs to the circle of major winners and was also the leader in the golf world rankings for a few weeks .

Career

The son of former Champions Tour player Bob Duval graduated from Episcopal High School of Jacksonville , was US Junior Amateur Champion in 1989 and continued his amateur career at Georgia Tech , where he was four times All-American , twice ACC Player of the Year , and finally 1993 National Player of the Year .

After two years on the second-ranked Nike Tour , Duval was eligible to play for the PGA TOUR 1995. Success quickly set in there, and he was called up to the Presidents Cup Team in 1996 , where he had a flawless match record of four wins from four encounters. Between 1997 and 2001 Duval won thirteen tournaments on the PGA Tour, including the prestigious Tour Championship in 1997 and the Players Championship in 1999, and in 2000 the World Cup with his partner Tiger Woods . After the dubious reputation of "world's best player without a major title" for a few years, he finally managed to win the Open Championship in 2001 . In the Masters in 1998 and 2001 Duval took second places.

In addition to reaching the top of the world rankings in April 1999, a 59 final round at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic - at the Palmer Course of the PGA West in La Quinta, California - was another highlight of his career. Before him, only Al Geiberger and Chip Beck achieved this result , but not in a final round.

After his major win, Duval fell into an inexplicable form and after 2003 he even interrupted his career for a longer period. Back, wrist and shoulder injuries, as well as personal problems, made his comeback efforts even more difficult. Only with the 2006 season did a silver lining appear on the horizon. He made two cuts in a row and briefly moved back into the limelight at the US Open when he could achieve the best round of the tournament and in the end, six strokes behind, reached a good 16th place. At the US Open 2009 Duval finished second, two strokes behind.

Duval played for his country three times in the Presidents Cup (1996, 1998 and 2000) and twice in the Ryder Cup (1999 and 2002). He lives in Denver , Colorado with his wife Susie and four children .
