William Todd Hamilton (born October 18, 1965 in Galesburg , Illinois ) is an American professional golfer of the PGA TOUR , who belongs to the circle of major winners.
He became a professional golfer in 1987 , but could not qualify for the PGA TOUR , and turned to the Asian tournament scene. Hamilton played on the Asian Tour and in particular on the Japan Golf Tour , which he left as the most successful non-Japanese after eleven tournament victories and a career prize money of over 630 million yen .
It was only at the age of 38 and in the eighth attempt that he was able to get the license to play the PGA TOUR through the Q-School in autumn 2003 . In March 2004, Hamilton won his first tournament, the highly endowed Honda Classic, and four months later he had the big hit at the Open Championship in Royal Troon . He defeated Ernie Els after a four-hole jump-off.
