Thomas Edward Lehman (born March 7, 1959 in Austin , Minnesota ) is an American professional golfer of the PGA TOUR . He belongs to the circle of major winners and took first place in the world rankings for a week in April 1997 .

Career

Lehman became a professional golfer after attending the University of Minnesota in 1982 . From 1983 to 1985 he played with little success on the PGA TOUR and had to switch to smaller tournament series in Asia, South Africa and the second-rate American Ben Hogan Tour for the next six seasons . In 1991, however, he topped the money list there and qualified for the PGA TOUR, of which Lehman has been a member since 1992.

His career highlight was 1996 when he won the Open Championship . His other four victories on the PGA TOUR include prominent titles such as the Tour Championship , the Memorial Tournament and the Colonial National Invitational .

So far, Lehman has won a total of 28 tournaments worldwide, he was three times in the Ryder Cup and three times in the Presidents Cup Team of the USA and represented his country twice in the Dunhill Cup and once in the World Cup . In 2006 he was the captain ( non-playing captain ) of the US team at the Ryder Cup.

Lehman has been eligible to play on the Champions Tour since March 2009 and was victorious when he first competed in April 2009. In 2011 and 2012 he won the Charles Schwab Cup and in 2011 the Champions Tour money list.

Tom Lehman has been married to his wife Melissa since 1990. The couple have four children and live in Scottsdale , Arizona .
