Austin (also City of Austin ) is a city in the southeast of the US state Minnesota with around 23,300 inhabitants (as of 2000). It is the county seat of Mower County . In the north it is in Austin Township, in the south in Lansing Township, but is still politically independent of both.
The city's largest employer is Hormel Foods Corporation , a food manufacturer and producer of Spam . Every year she organizes the “Spam Jam”, a festival lasting several days in the city. There is also a “Spam Museum” in “Spam Town USA” , as Austin is sometimes called.

Geographical location
Austin is located in the midwestern United States in the southeastern state of Minnesota. According to the United States Census Bureau, the area of the city is 28.1 square kilometers. Of this, 27.8 square kilometers are land and 0.2 square kilometers are water.

Austin falls in the continental climate typical of Minnesota with hot and humid summers and cold winters. An average of 812 millimeters of precipitation falls per year. On an average of 79 days, the maximum daily temperature is below zero degrees Celsius. The annual snowfall is 104 centimeters. Austin is also on the outskirts of Tornado Alley .

history
In 1853, Austin Nichols, who later gave the city its name, built a log cabin on the Cedar River . A year later he sold it to Chauncey Leverich, who also built a sawmill on the river. This attracted more settlers to the area. In 1856 the area had enough inhabitants that a county and thus the city could be founded. On March 1, 1856, Governor Willis Gorman confirmed the establishment of the county. In the same year the city was named after the first settler Austin. In the following years numerous settlers and businesses settled here. 1867-69 Austin was attached to the Chicago-Milwaukee-St. Paul attached. In 1885, the Chicago Great Western Railroad began operations. In 1891 George A. Hormel founded George A. Hormel & Co.
From August 1984 to June 1985, Austin was the focus of a labor dispute at Hormel. After protests and work stoppages due to wage cuts, Governor Rudy Perpich deployed the National Guard to protect the non-striking workers and the manufacturing facilities from the strikers. Some of these measures met with great criticism. Barbara Kopple worked on what happened in the Oscar- winning documentary American Dream .

According to the 2000 census, Austin has 23,314 people in 9,897 households and 6,076 families. Racially, the population is made up of 93 percent white population and smaller minorities.
Children under the age of 18 live in 27.2% of the 9897 households, married couples in 48.6%, female singles in 9.5% and 38.6% are not family households. 33.4% of all households consist exclusively of a single person and 17.2% are single people over 65 years of age.
In relation to the entire city, the population is made up of 23.3% residents under the age of 18, 8.7% between 18 and 24 years, 25.1% between 25 and 44 years, 20.9% between 45 and 64 years 22.0% over 65 years. The median is 40 years. About 52% of the population is female.
The median income of a household is USD 33,750 and that of a family is USD 42,691. The per capita income is $ 20,651. About 10.9% of the population and 7.5% of families live below the poverty line.
