history

Foundation and expansion

Hormel was founded in 1891 by George A. Hormel , son of German immigrants, as George A. Hormel & Company in Austin, southeast Minnesota. Hormel opened his company on the site of an old dairy, which initially focused on the production and sale of meat products. At the end of the year, Hormel had six employees. In the period that followed, the company continued to expand and was able to continuously increase sales. In 1901 the company was converted into a corporation and opened a sales office in Minneapolis that same year . In the following years, further distribution centers were opened in the Midwest, but also in large cities such as San Antonio , Dallas and Atlanta . In 1924, for the first time, over a million pigs were processed into food within a year. Two years later, Hormel was the first manufacturer to bring canned meat to the market. In 1929, Jay C. Hormel, son of George Hormel, became chairman of the company. However, the rapid growth continued. Later, the factories acquired a fleet of 125 refrigerated freight wagons for rail transport to transport the goods. In the 1930s, Hormel launched a number of new brands and products, including SPAM . A catchy brand name was sought for the less memorable term Hormel Spiced Ham . In a naming competition, the name SPAM (an artificial word from Sp iced H am ) prevailed. The widespread availability of breakfast meat was satirized in Monty Python's famous spam sketch , which resulted in the use of the word for mass mail spam .

Development from the 1940s

On the company's 50th anniversary, Hormel, which now employed almost 4,500 people, achieved sales of USD 74.6 million . That same year, George and Jay Hormel founded The Hormel Foundation and the Hormel Institute , which conducts research in collaboration with the University of Minnesota . In 1959, Hormel produced the one billionth can of spam. In August 1985, workers went on strike to protest the poor pay and poor working conditions. This lasted a total of ten months. Minnesota's Governor Rudy Perpich , who appointed the National Guard to protect the workers who did not strike , also called on the workers to protest . More than 700 striking workers left Hormel after the end of the strike. In 1986 the poultry producer Jennie-O Foods was taken over. In 1993, Hormel changes the company name to Hormel Foods Corporation .

Todays situation

In the company's history, Hormel has developed into a versatile food manufacturer (meat products, pasta, eggs and edible oils) with a wide range of products. It was ranked 401th of the United States' 500 largest companies in 2006. In fiscal 2008, the company had sales of $ 9.32 billion and net income of $ 602 million. Around 20,400 people are employed worldwide.

In early 2017, Smithfield Foods completed the acquisition of California's largest pork processor, Clougherty Packaging (brands: Farmer John, Saag's Specialty Meats) from Hormel Foods.
