Rudy Perpich

Rudolph "Rudy" George Perpich (born June 7, 1928 in Carson Lake , Minnesota , † September 21, 1995 in Minnetonka ; born Rudolph George Prpić ) was an American politician of the Minnesota Democratic Farmer Labor Party . From 1976 to 1979 and 1983 to 1991 he was governor of Minnesota.

biography

Perpich was born in Carson Lake to parents of Croatian descent. This was also the reason why he only learned the English language in school. After graduating from Hibbing High School , he first went to the United States Army for two years . Perpich then studied dentistry at Marquette University in Milwaukee . After successfully completing his studies in 1954, he returned to Hibbing to work as a dentist .

His federal career as a politician began in 1962 when it was first in the Minnesota Senate was chosen. In the elections four years later he was confirmed in office. In 1970 he was elected 39th lieutenant governor . When Wendell Anderson resigned as governor at the end of 1976 to replace Vice President-elect Walter Mondale in the US Senate, Perpich became the 34th governor of Minnesota on December 29, 1976. However, when he was defeated by Republican challenger Al Quie in the 1978 gubernatorial elections, he initially worked at Control Data Corporation before being re-elected governor in 1982. After he was re-elected in 1986, he lost the 1990 election to Arne Carlson .

After completing his political career, Perpich went to Croatia in 1991 to help build the post-communist, democratically elected government. He moved to Paris in 1992 before returning to Minnesota a year later. Perpich died on December 21, 1995 of complications from colon cancer . His grave is in Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis .
