The city was primarily a destination for Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish, Irish, Hungarian and Italian expats at the beginning of the 20th century. The settlers wanted to use the area as a stepping stone to eventually move on, but many got stuck and started families.

Between 1918 and 1922 the town was swallowed up by the opencast mine.
