history
Eveleth was founded in 1892 after the discovery of iron ore in the region. Three years later, more iron ore deposits were discovered below the settlement. In 1902 Eveleth was granted city rights. Even if iron ore mining in the region lost its importance after the Second World War, it is still the city's largest economic factor.
In 2002, an aircraft approaching Eveleth Airfield crashed over a wooded area near the city. US Senator Paul Wellstone was among the eight fatalities .
