In 111 games with the Golden Gophers, he scored 144 goals and gave 154 assists. He was appointed to the All-American team twice. In 1954 the team was in the NCAA Final Four, but in the final the Gophers lost 4: 5 in overtime against the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute . After graduating in 1955, Maya completed his military service. He was appointed to the US national team and won the silver medal with the US team at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo . As a player, he scored over 200 goals and more than 300 assists for the Bobcats.

After retiring, Maya worked for a media company in Minnesota. In 1976 he was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame and 1997 into the IIHF Hall of Fame . In 1998 he received the Lester Patrick Trophy . His jersey number 8 has not been awarded by the Gophers since 1998.
