At the 29th Ice Hockey World Championship (also the 40th European Ice Hockey Championship ) in 1962 , the world's ice hockey elite met for the second time in three years in the USA . After the 1960 Olympic tournament in Squaw Valley , this world championship took place in the Midwest in the cities of Colorado Springs and Denver from March 7th to 18th .

The circumstances of the tournament were dominated by the Cold War , of the construction of the Wall in Berlin six months earlier and the impending Cuban Missile Crisis contrary contributed to a new peak. The authorities of the host country refused entry to the GDR's national ice hockey team , which the Americans still did not recognize as a sovereign state. Out of solidarity, all qualified Eastern Bloc teams decided not to take part in the tournament. It was the second major boycott of an ice hockey world championship after the western states stayed away from the ice hockey world championship in 1957 in Moscow due to the suppression of the Hungarian uprising . In Switzerland, a few weeks before the World Cup, the national coach Reto Delnon was fired because of his membership in the Communist Party of Work .

In addition to the teams missing due to the boycott, some Western European teams did not participate due to the high travel costs. These cancellations could only be partially offset by reports from the Australians and Japanese. The number of participants was only 14 teams. As a result, only two groups were played at this World Cup, the A group (with eight teams) and the B group (with six teams).

Two of the places in the A group that had become vacant due to the absence of the USSR , Czechoslovakia and the GDR were taken by the first two winners of last year's B World Cup, Norway and Great Britain. The third participant was played in a qualifying game between Switzerland (third in the B-WM 1961 ) and Austria (sixth in the B-WM 1961 , Poland boycotted, Italy did not take part).

As in 1957 , Sweden was able to benefit from the partial absence of competition and celebrate its third World Cup and ninth European title. The favored Canadians and the US team had to be satisfied with the silver and bronze rankings.

Qualification for the A World Championship

Originally, the German team would have had to play in an elimination game against Norway in order to participate in the A group. This became obsolete after the blockade.
