Jarmo Wasama (born December 2, 1943 in Elimäki , † February 2, 1966 in Tampere ) was a Finnish ice hockey player who played for Tampereen Ilves during his playing career .

Career

Jarmo Wasama played from 1960 to 1966 in the top Finnish league for Tampereen Ilves . With Ilves he won the Finnish championship twice, a silver medal and two bronze medals. Wasama has been voted All-Star of the Finnish Championship five times . In 1965 he was voted the best player in the Finnish championship by journalists. Wasama died in a road traffic accident on February 2, 1966 . His jersey number 2 was banned by Ilves and no longer given to any player.

With the Finnish national ice hockey team , he took part in three world championships and one edition of the Olympic Games (1964). In total, he came to 74 appearances in the Finnish national team. In 1985 Wasama was inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame .

The Jarmo Wasama commemorative trophy , which is awarded annually by the SM-liiga to the best newcomer to the league ( rookie ), was named after him.
