The 20th ice hockey world championship and 31st ice hockey European championship in 1953 took place from March 7th to 15th in Switzerland in Zurich and Basel .

The tournament was perceived as a "farce" because only four teams had registered for the A-World Cup. In particular, the strong ice hockey nations Canada and USA were missing , but the A-group teams from Norway and Poland also shone with their absence. At least five nations plus one B representation from Switzerland (out of competition) took part in the B tournament, which was taking place at the same time and was called the junior tournament. The sporting value of the World Cup tournament was further diminished by the fact that Czechoslovakia canceled the tournament after the death of its President Gottwald and started the journey home early. After all, the German team owes its second silver medal in its World Cup history to this development and brought the Swedes their first World Cup title and their seventh European Championship.

Due to the small number of participants, the tournament was played in a double round.
