The 13th ice hockey world championship and 24th ice hockey European championship took place from February 3 to 12, 1939 in Basel and Zurich , Switzerland . The Canadian national ice hockey team , which was represented by the club team of the Trail Smoke Eaters , won the world championship again. This was also the eleventh title win of the Canadian team. Third place for Switzerland was enough to win the third European Championship title, although the title was only won in a late final in March against Czechoslovakia after both teams had finished the final round with the same number of points in the actual World Cup tournament. Czechoslovakia was occupied by the German Reich a little later. Due to the Second World War, the World Cup was the last until 1947.

mode

The mode of the event was similar to the 1936 Olympic tournament . 14 teams took part in this World Cup. There were four preliminary round groups, with two groups with four and two groups with three teams. The first two of each group reached the intermediate round. The intermediate round was then played in two groups of four, with the top two in each group reaching the final round. The remaining teams played in a placement round. The direct comparisons made in the preliminary and intermediate rounds were not carried over to the next round.

The play-off between the German Reich and Italy, which took place in Zurich on February 6, 1939, was canceled when the score was 0-0 after regular time due to fog. The International Ice Hockey League decided on February 6th around midnight that the 2nd place was determined on the basis of the goal difference.
