The stomatology ( Greek στόμα stoma , German , mouth ' and λόγος lógos , German , Word' , teaching ') is the science of healing of diseases of the oral cavity , thus the mouth - jaw - and dentistry . Stomatologist is an alternative term for dentist outside the Federal Republic (1989) .

The tooth-mouth-jaw system is called the stomatognathic system.

The word stomatology was used early on by dental clinics, scientific societies and specialist journals when naming them. The most prominent in Europe are the Austrian Journal for Stomatology , which is now in its 106th year (only stomatology since 2002 ), and the Hungarian specialist journal Fogorvosi szemle, which is almost the same age, with the subtitle Stomatologia Hungarica , which was already in 102 in 2009.

GDR

In the German Democratic Republic (GDR), the term stomatology for dentistry was common. The course was usually concluded with a diploma thesis (Dipl.-Stom. = Diplom-Stomatologist). The course was followed by further training to become a specialist dentist for general stomatology. Dentists still have this specialist or diploma degree today (e.g. on their practice signs, forms and stamps).

The term stomatology was intended as an extension of the too narrowly defined term dentistry, since with the scientific development of dentistry the dentist saw himself more and more as a doctor who not only treats the teeth in isolation , but is also responsible as a specialist for the entire oral cavity and beyond also for the jaw and the temporomandibular joint (with overlaps with other specialties: maxillofacial surgery , ENT ).

In the curriculum revised under the chairmanship of Halle Ordinarius Erwin Reichenbach (1897–1973) of the Scientific Advisory Board for Dentistry at the State Secretariat for Higher Education and Technical Education (SHF) in 1953, "stomatology" appeared for the first time instead of "tooth, mouth and jaw diseases" on.

Europe

As part of the reform of dentistry studies in some European countries (greater emphasis on general medicine aspects), the concept of stomatology found both in the Eastern European countries (Soviet Union - стоматология , Romania - Cabinete stomatologice , Bulgaria, Poland, Slovakia - Stomatologia , Czech Republic - stomatology ) as also in the Western European countries (e.g. France - Odonto-Stomatologie , Spain - estomatología and odontoestomatología , Italy - apparato stomatognatico ) greater distribution. Only in the Federal Republic (before 1989) and in the Anglo-American language area did it never gain acceptance.

Differences in meaning

However, there were and are certain differences in the meaning of the term stomatology in different countries. In the Eastern European countries, based on the definition of the term used in the leading Soviet Union, stomatology was understood to mean dentistry as a whole with all its specialties. On the other hand, in the Anglo-American area only the additional specialty that was added to the actual narrow and limited to the tooth "dentistry" was referred to as stomatology - but this term disappeared again in the Anglo-American area and the new specialty for the entire oral cavity became the "Dentistry" integrated again. Today it is sometimes referred to as oral biology .
