Erwin Reichenbach

Erwin Reichenbach (born August 1, 1897 in Augsburg , † January 21, 1973 in Halle ) was a German stomatologist and university professor.

Life

Erwin Reichenbach, son of a regional judge, finished his school career in 1916 with the Abitur . After graduating from high school, he enrolled to study medicine and did military service in a medical formation (awarded the Iron Cross II. Class, the Bavarian Military Merit Cross with Crown and Swords and the Wound Badge in black). In 1919 he served in the military regiment in Munich, then in the resident army. After his discharge from the army, he studied medicine and dentistry at the universities of Marburg, Breslau, Münster, Kiel and Leipzig from 1919. During his studies he became a member of the AGV Munich . Reichenbach graduated with a doctorate in dentistry in 1921. med. dent. ab (dissertation: "Methods for mobilizing ankylotic jaw joints") and received his license to practice medicine. 1930 followed the medical doctorate to Dr. med. and the habilitation at the University of Munich.

After the handover of power to the National Socialists , he became a member of the NSDAP and the SA in 1933 and also became a member of the NS Medical Association and the NS Lecturer Association. Reichenbach was from 1930 private lecturer and from 1933 associate professor and in 1936 full professor at the University of Leipzig . During the Second World War , in addition to his teaching activities, he was employed in the medical service, most recently from 1943 as an oral surgeon in specialist hospitals. He was seriously injured in the war in 1944. From 1944, Reichenbach was still a member of the scientific advisory board of Karl Brandt , the authorized representative for health care .

After the liberation from National Socialism , he was removed from the professorship in Leipzig in May 1945. In 1947 he received a professorship at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and became head of the clinic and polyclinic f. Tooth, mouth and jaw diseases as well as director of the city youth dental clinic. After multiple honors, e.g. B. National Prize of the GDR in 1956, he fell politically out of favor in 1961 and lost his job at the university in 1962, combined with a professional ban. Reichenbach was able to resume teaching at the University of Halle in 1964. Since 1950 he was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and from 1955 until his death its vice-president. In 1961 he was elected a full member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin . In 1962 he received the Merit Medal and in 1972 the Cothenius Medal of the Leopoldina.

The Saxony-Anhalt Dental Association has been awarding the Erwin Reichenbach Prize, endowed with 2,500 euros, every year since 2000 .
