The 14th European Ice Hockey Championship took place in Hungary this year ; was played from January 28 to February 3, 1929 in the Hungarian capital Budapest . In addition to the hosts Hungary, the participants were Switzerland , Poland , Austria , Czechoslovakia , Belgium , Germany and Italy . The Finns initially registered decided not to participate.

The competition mode was similar to that of the EM 1926 . The game was initially played in three preliminary round groups with three teams each (due to the withdrawal of Finland , Group A only played with 2 teams). The group winners qualified directly for the semifinals, while the runners-up played off the fourth semifinal participant in a round of hope. There were no further placement games for places 7 and 8. For the first time in a pure European Championship tournament based on the Canadian model, three-thirds and no longer two halves were played.

Czechoslovakia became the new European ice hockey champion and won their fifth title. The Polish team celebrated their greatest success to date with the silver medal.
