The games of the 50th Ice Hockey World Championship and the 61st European Ice Hockey Championship in 1985 took place in Czechoslovakia , Switzerland and France after a one-year break due to the Olympic Games . A total of 24 teams took part in the world championships.
A world championship
The group A tournament was held in Prague, Czechoslovakia.
The Czechoslovak ice hockey team used their home advantage and became world champions for the sixth time. The team benefited from the new competition mode introduced in 1983 , according to which the points and goals gained in the preliminary round are not taken into the final round. The goal of this mode change, to animate the final round, which is often boring due to the Soviet dominance, was achieved. Because if the preliminary round points had been taken into account in the final accounts, the USSR would have become world champions for the 20th time. The Sbornaja dominated the preliminary round impressively and thus became European champion for the 23rd time. In the final round, however, followed two surprising defeats against Czechoslovakia and Canada, whereby the Sbornaja won the bronze medal in the final bill. Canada, on the other hand, was able to win the silver medal again for the first time since 1962 . The Swedes played a weak tournament, who had to go into the relegation round for the first time and experienced their worst placement since 1937 with 6th place . The two clear defeats against arch-rivals Finland should be emphasized.
