Ronald Scott Stevens (born April 1, 1964 in Kitchener , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach , who played 1868 games for the Washington Capitals , St. Louis Blues and New Jersey during his playing career between 1982 and 2004 Devils has played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Stevens won the Stanley Cup three times in the course of his career  - all between 1995 and 2003 with the New Jersey Devils. With 1,635 NHL games in the regular, he ranks eighth in the list of players with the most appearances. From December 2014 to June 2015 he trained the New Jersey Devils with Adam Oates .

Career

Scott Stevens was drawn fifth in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals. He achieved his greatest success with the New Jersey Devils, which he led as team captain to three Stanley Cup victories; he was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs in 2000 .

He was considered one of the toughest checkers in NHL history. His checks were mostly fair and regular, but they were so tough that they caused injuries to some opponents that put their careers at risk. Eric Lindros and Paul Kariya were some of the most prominent victims of his uncompromising commitment. As a complete defender, Stevens was particularly brilliant on the defensive and was almost impossible to beat in a one-on-one game.

Although he was a so-called "defensive defenseman", Stevens scored a remarkable 908 scorer points (196 goals, 712 assists ) in 1635 games . His plus / minus statistics of +393 were outstanding. In the 1993-1994 season he achieved the top value of +53, won the NHL Plus / Minus Award (then: Alka-Seltzer Plus Award) and won the election of the best NHL defender in the regular season ( James Norris Trophy ) second behind Ray Bourque . Despite multiple nominations for this trophy, he never won it in his career.

Farewell to Scott Stevens in the Continental Airlines Arena

After a concussion and the NHL lockout of the 2004/2005 season , Scott Stevens retired on September 6, 2005 from active ice hockey. His 1,635 games are the NHL record for a defender. His shirt number 4 is no longer awarded by the New Jersey Devils. Scott Stevens is the first player in Devils history to receive this special award.

On November 12, 2007, Scott Stevens was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame . From 2012 to 2014 he was assistant coach for the New Jersey Devils . He returned to them in December 2014 when he took over the post of head coach together with Adam Oates . You inherited the previously dismissed Peter DeBoer . This interim solution ended after the end of the 2014/15 season when John Hynes was introduced as the new sole head coach.

In June 2016, the Minnesota Wild hired him as an assistant coach under Bruce Boudreau , but he resigned from this position after one season for personal reasons.
