Mark Steven Howe (born May 28, 1955 in Detroit , Michigan ) is a former Canadian - American ice hockey player who played for the Hartford Whalers , Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings in national hockey between 1970 and 1995 League as well as the Houston Eros and New England Whalers were active in the World Hockey Association . He currently works in the Detroit Red Wings organization as Director of Pro Scouting .
Career
Mark Howe began his career in 1970 with the Detroit Junior Red Wings in the Junior League SOJHL . In his second year he won the silver medal with the US national ice hockey team at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo . In the summer Howe moved to the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey Association and won the Memorial Cup there with the Toronto Marlboros . Howe was also recognized as Most Valuable Player of the Memorial Cup Finals with the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy .
In the 1973 WHA Amateur Draft he was selected by the Houston Eros and he moved to the team in the summer of 1973, where he was to play with his father Gordie and his brother Marty . The team belonged to the World Hockey Association , which was then created as a competitive league to the National Hockey League . Mark Howe showed his skills as a defender in his first season, who could also play in the attacking positions. He scored 79 points in 76 games and was awarded the Lou Kaplan Trophy as the best rookie . Led by Marty, Gordie and Mark Howe, the Houston Eros won the 1974 and 1975 AVCO World Trophy , the WHA championship trophy .
In 1974, Mark Howe took part in the Summit Series for Team Canada , as he has a Canadian citizenship in addition to his US citizenship. In the summer of the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft selected by the Boston Bruins in the second round at position 25, he decided, however, to continue playing in the WHA. In 1977 he joined the New England Whalers with his brother and father within the WHA . In the 1978/79 season he switched again frequently from defense to attack and was one of the top scorers of the WHA with 42 goals and 65 assists . It was his most successful season, but also the last season of the WHA, which had to stop playing for financial reasons. The New England Whalers were among the four WHA teams that entered the NHL. There they played from then on under the name Hartford Whalers .
In the 1979/80 season , Mark Howe was able to continue his good performances from previous years and quickly established himself among the best defenders in the NHL. In the following two years he played for Hartford before he was transferred to the Philadelphia Flyers in August 1982 . While the Whalers still had problems regularly qualifying for the playoffs in their first years , the Flyers were already among the established teams that could also play for the Stanley Cup . 1985 and 1987 Howe reached the Stanley Cup Finals with the Flyers, but both times they were defeated by the Edmonton Oilers . In 1989 they were able to reach the conference final again, but the next three years they missed the playoffs. Howe was one of the most important players in the Philadelphia Flyers during the 1980s, but from the 1988/89 season he was often injured and missed the team at least 40 games in three seasons.
In 1992 he returned to his homeland and was signed by the Detroit Red Wings . But also in the following years he was absent from the team again and again because of back problems and thus missed participation in the Stanley Cup final in 1995, which was lost to the New Jersey Devils .
In September 1995 he finally ended his career. Mark Howe took second place three times in his career in the election for the James Norris Memorial Trophy , which is awarded to the best defender in the NHL.
After retiring, Mark Howe stayed directly in the Detroit Red Wings organization and initially worked as a scout with responsibility for the IHL and the AHL . Howe eventually became Director of Pro Scouting, assuming primary responsibility for the Red Wings talent scouts for the professional leagues and mainly training defenders on the AHL farm team .
As a member of the Detroit Red Wings organization, his name was engraved on the Stanley Cup along with players, coaches and other officials in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008 after the team won the NHL playoffs.
In 2011 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame . On March 6, 2012, the Philadelphia Flyers blocked his shirt number 2, which has not been given to any player since then. In 2016, like his father almost 50 years earlier, he was awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy .
family
Mark's father, Gordie Howe , known as "Mr. Hockey" , is the player with the most NHL games. From 1946 to 1971 he played for the Detroit Red Wings, won the Stanley Cup four times and was recognized several times as most valuable player and best scorer . After retiring, he returned to the WHA in 1973 and ended his career in 1980 after another season in the NHL at the age of 52. Mark played with his brother Marty until 1982, when they both left the Hartford Whalers. Marty ended his career in 1985. Mark Howe and his wife live in Philadelphia and have two sons and a daughter.
