Since the summer of 2016, Redden has been the Assistant Director of Player Development for the Nashville Predators in the NHL.
Career
Redden grew up in a hockey family. His father Gord played in 1969 with the Regina Pats in the finals of the Memorial Cup . After taking his first steps on the ice in his hometown Lloydminster , he played for the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League between 1993 and 1996 . Due to his rookie season , which was awarded the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy , and an equally outstanding season, he was a promising candidate for the NHL Entry Draft 1995 to be selected as the overall first. While the Ottawa Senators used their " First Overall Pick " for Bryan Berard , Redden was chosen second by the New York Islanders . Redden, who won the gold medal with the Canadian U20 national team in 1995 and 1996 at the World Cup, stayed in Brandon for another year and led the team to win the President's Cup in the spring of 1996 .
As early as January 1996, the Islanders and Senators had agreed to swap Redden with goalkeeper Damian Rhodes for Berard, Don Beaupre and Martin Straka . And so the defender started his NHL career for the Ottawa Senators in the 1996/97 season . Redden fulfilled the hopes placed in him and developed into one of the best defenders in the NHL. With his excellent skills, he was always to be found in the scorer lists and in the 2005/06 season he achieved 50 points for the first time. A particular strength of Redden was the game opening. During his time in Ottawa, Redden was also repeatedly active for the Canadian national team at international tournaments . He played in the 1999 , 2001 and 2005 World Cups. He also won the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and was part of the Canadian squad at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy .
After eleven NHL seasons with the Ottawa Senators, Redden signed a contract with the New York Rangers in July 2008 that should bring him $ 39 million over a six-year contract period. However, the defender could not build on his previous achievements and came under more and more criticism. The New York Post described the 2009 contract as "the worst in NHL history". After two years of play, the defender was finally promoted to the Connecticut Whale , the Rangers' farm team in the American Hockey League , and was named captain of the team the following season. After the expiry of the NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement and the subsequent lockout , the management of the Rangers decided before the start of the 2012/13 season, however, not to reappoint Redden to the farm team and thus not to pay his planned seasonal salary of five million dollars have to.
After the lockout ended, Redden was finally ransomed from his contract on January 18, 2013. That same day he signed a new one-year contract with the St. Louis Blues as a free agent . On April 3, 2013, he was transferred to the Boston Bruins . After he remained without a club at the beginning of the following season, Redden announced the end of his playing career in January 2014. After a break of more than two years, Redden was engaged in the summer of 2016 for the post of Assistant Director of Player Development at the Nashville Predators from the NHL.
