Aktan Abdykalykow ( Aktan Arym Kubat , Kyrgyz Актан Абдыкалыков (Актан Арым Кубат) ; born March 26, 1957 in Kuntuu , Kyrgyz SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Kyrgyz director .

Act

Abdykalykow graduated from the Kyrgyz State Art School with a diploma in 1980 , then worked as a set and artistic designer in a national film studio , before becoming artistic for the first time in 1990 as a director of a documentary film . Four short films followed, some of which were awarded prizes at film festivals, before he made his first feature film Beshkempir - The Strange Son in 1998 . The film, for which he also wrote the screenplay, is considered the first film production from independent Kyrgyzstan and has won numerous international prizes, such as the “Silver Leopard” in the Young Cinema category at the Locarno International Film Festival and the Foundlings Prize in Cottbus.

Abdikalikow's second feature film The Monkey from 2001 was also nominated for numerous film prizes, such as the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Prize , which was awarded as part of the European Film Prize.

His third feature film The Thief of Light was honored with the Special Jury Award at the Amiens Film Festival , received the Audience Award at the Cottbus Film Festival, received the NETPAC Jury Award at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival , and won at the Kinoshock Film Festival in Anapa , Russia, the Award of the Film Critics and the Award for Best Male Leading Role, and received the Grand Prix and the FIPRESCI Award at the Eurasia Film Festival in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Furthermore, the film was accepted as one of nine films in the “Global Lens 2011” program of MoMA , Museum of Modern Arts, New York, and is Kyrgyzstan's official candidate for the 2011 Oscar nominations.

The wings of the people (Centaur) from 2017 is an ode to cinema, its tradition and the power of its images. The drama won the CICAE Art Cinema Prize at the 2017 Berlinale .
