Dallas Earl Smith (born October 10, 1941 in Hamiota , Manitoba ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (defender) who played for the Boston Bruins and New York Rangers in the National Hockey League from 1959 to 1978 .
Career
After a few years with the Estevan Bruins in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League , the Boston Bruins brought him to the 1959/60 season for five games in the NHL. After he had spent the following year completely with the Bruins, he played the next seasons with the Pittsburgh Hornets in the American Hockey League and with the Portland Buckaroos and the San Francisco Seals in the Western Hockey League .
From the 1965/66 season Smith came back to Boston, but also played in the Central Professional Hockey League with the Oklahoma City Blazers . It was only when the NHL was expanded by six additional teams that he made the breakthrough in the 1967/68 season . This year the plus / minus rating was introduced for the first time , which he led with +33. Smith played in a row with the young attacking Bobby Orr and took over the defensive duties of the defensive duo.
From 1971 to 1974 he played four times in a row in the NHL All-Star Game . After the 1976/77 season he announced his retirement, but his former teammate Phil Esposito persuaded him to play for another year for the New York Rangers . However, he was not satisfied with his performance in New York and regretted his return. At the end of the season, he hung up his skates for good.
