Chris Chelios (born January 25, 1962 as Christos Kostas Tselios in Chicago , Illinois ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach of Greek descent. Between 1983 and 2010 he played a total of over 1900 games for the Canadiens de Montréal , Chicago Blackhawks , Detroit Red Wings and Atlanta Thrashers in the National Hockey League . During this time he won the Stanley Cup in 1986 with the Canadiens and in 2002 and 2008 with the Red Wings . He also represented the USA national team at four Winter Olympics, winning a silver medal in 2002 and a gold medal at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey .

Chelios is considered one of the best defenders of his generation, so he was awarded the James Norris Memorial Trophy three times as the best defender in the NHL. He also holds a number of NHL records , with no player playing more playoffs (24) or playoff games (266) than him, while he is the oldest Stanley Cup winner to date. He is also a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame , the IIHF Hall of Fame, and the United States Hockey Hall of Fame .

Career

Chelios played during his junior years with the Moose Jaw Canucks in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League . Here the defender was able to draw attention to himself both on the offensive, but also through his robust physical use. In the 1981 NHL Entry Draft he was drawn by the Canadiens de Montréal from the National Hockey League in the second round to 40th position, but stayed in Moose Jaw and then played for two years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a game division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . He then worked for the US hockey association USA Hockey in the 1984/84 season in order to prepare intensively for the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo .

It was not until the end of the 1983/84 season that Chelios was appointed to the Canadiens' NHL squad for the first time. After twelve games with just two assists in the regular season, he drew attention to himself with ten points scorer in 15 playoff games. In his first full season, the defender, who at 22 was a relatively old rookie , made a big impression in the league with 64 scorer points in 74 games. He was elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team and could have won the Calder Memorial Trophy in many other years , but since Mario Lemieux made his debut that year, Chelios only stayed second. In the following 1985/86 season he won his first Stanley Cup with the Canadiens . Outstanding was his performance in the 1988/89 season when he was elected to the League's First All-Star Team and was awarded the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the best defender in the NHL . He stayed in Montréal for seven seasons and was also the Canadiens' first US team captain in his final season . In the summer of 1990 Chelios was given to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Denis Savard in his hometown .

His start in Chicago was good and he was able to win the James Norris Memorial Trophy again in the 1992/93 season . Even before he was named team captain in 1995, he was the figurehead and face of the Blackhawks. In 1999, the 37-year-old Chelios was certainly no longer the outstanding player he had been in the late 1980s to mid-1990s, but he was still able to help a good team and so the Detroit Red Wings won him in 1999. After a decent season in 2000/01 , he suffered a knee injury in November 2001 and had to pause large parts of the 2001/02 season . He returned to the following season and was able to win his second Stanley Cup in 2002 with the Red Wings .

Chelios, who turned 45 in January 2007, signed a contract with the Red Wings for the 2006/07 season . After the retirement of his teammate Steve Yzerman , he was the active player with the most NHL games. On April 21, 2007 in the game against the Calgary Flames , he became the oldest defender who managed an underpaid goal in the NHL playoffs . After the end of the 2006/07 season, Chelios received the first ever Mark Messier Leader of the Year Award for his exceptional leadership skills. For the 2007/08 season , the Detroit Red Wings and manager Ken Holland signed another contract with Chris Chelios. On January 8, 2008, Chelios became the second oldest NHL player of all time at 45 years and 348 days. He had overtaken Moe Roberts and only Gordie Howe in front of him, who had played for the Hartford Whalers at the age of 52 . In the same year, Chelios won the Stanley Cup for the third time with Detroit, becoming the oldest Stanley Cup winner in NHL history.

After he was rarely used for Detroit in the 2008/09 season , his contract was not renewed in the summer of 2009. Despite his announcement that he still wanted to play ice hockey professionally at the age of 47, he did not receive any offers from other NHL teams until August. He signed a 25-game deal with the Chicago Wolves , the Atlanta Thrashers' farm team . He fulfilled this and another 25-game contract with the Wolves and then received a contract that enabled him to play with the Atlanta Thrashers in the NHL. He completed seven more games in the NHL before retiring after the 2009-10 season. No player in league history played more games as a defender or playoffs than Chelios. In 2011 he was honored with the induction into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame , two years later he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame .

In the summer of 2010, Chelios returned to the Detroit Red Wings, initially serving as Senior Advisor to Hockey Operations for five years . For the 2015/16 season he was promoted to the Red Wings coaching team and has been an assistant coach ever since. In the same position he worked at the U20 World Junior Championship in 2016 for the United States U20 team . For the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , South Korea , Chelios was also nominated as assistant coach of the US men's selection . In December 2017 it was announced that Chelios was one of the six new inductees into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2018. After the 2017/18 season, his work as an assistant coach at Red Wings ended.

International

Chelios represented his home country in the junior division at the 1982 Junior World Championships , where the Americans finished sixth.

For the men's selection , the defender took part in the 1984 , 1998 , 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympics. He was also on the squad at the Canada Cups in 1984 , 1987 and 1991 and the successor World Cup of Hockey in 1996 and 2004 . He was able to win the World Cup of Hockey with the US Boys in 1996, after finishing the previous tournament in 1991 in second place. He was also elected to the All-Star Team of the World Cup. Six years later he won the silver medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and found himself again in the All-Star team.

Others

Cheli's Children's Foundation

Chelios founded a foundation in 1986 that collects money for abused or seriously ill children, from 1990 to 1996 together with Jeremy Roenick , since then alone again. Several events take place every year, e.g. B. the Chris Chelios Charity Golf Classic or the Chris Chelios Hockey Camp .

Cheli's chili

Chelios has two bars called "Cheli's Chili Bar". The first opened in Dearborn, Michigan in 2003 , and the second opened in 2006 in downtown Detroit in a three-story house. He used to have a bar in Chicago, which was closed after moving to the Red Wings.

On the morning of January 2, 2007, the restaurant manager and the cook of "Cheli's Chili" were found stabbed to death on the second floor of the house. The police then arrested a 17-year-old former employee who had been fired a few months earlier. The video surveillance in the bar could identify him. On 22 August 2007, the perpetrator was for murder found guilty of first degree. Two weeks later, his sentence was set to life with no chance of early parole.
