Brian Joseph Gionta (born January 18, 1979 in Rochester , New York ) is a retired American ice hockey player . The right winger played a total of over 1,100 games in the National Hockey League between 2001 and 2018 , most of that time with the New Jersey Devils , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in the 2003 playoffs . He then ran for the Montréal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabers , each of which he led as captain , before ending his career with the Boston Bruins . He represented the USA national team at the 2006 and 2018 Winter Olympics . He has been a member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame since 2019 .
Career
Gionta studied at Boston College and also played ice hockey there. In the 1998 NHL Entry Draft , he was drawn in the third round as 82nd by the New Jersey Devils from the National Hockey League . He stayed in college until 2001 and played with Team USA at the World Cup in 2000 and 2001 .
For the 2001/02 season , the New Jersey Devils brought Gionta into their team. They first used him on their farm team , the Albany River Rats , in the American Hockey League . Gionta completed 33 games in the NHL. In the following two years he had established himself in the roster of the Devils, but did not excel as a great scorer. During the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season , he again completed 15 games for the Albany River Rats in the AHL and then moved to the German Ice Hockey League to end the season with the Iserlohn Roosters . Due to his wife's pregnancy, the family returned to North America before he was licensed.
When the NHL resumed gaming in autumn 2005, Gionta came back stronger than ever before. He finished the 2005/06 season as the top scorer of the Devils and scored 48 goals more than any player in the Devils dress had scored in one season; in February 2006 he played with Team USA at the Olympic Winter Games in Turin . After his contract with the New Jersey Devils had not previously been renewed, Gionta signed on July 1, 2009 as a free agent with the Canadiens de Montréal . In September 2010 he was named team captain of the Canadiens. Following the 2013/14 season , his contract in Montréal was not renewed.
In July 2014 he again signed a three-year contract with the Buffalo Sabers as a free agent . There he leads the team - just as he did in Montréal - as captain. At the end of the 2016/17 season , Gionta completed his 1,000th game in the NHL. Beyond this season, however, he did not receive a further contract in Buffalo, so that he was looking for a new employer from July 2017. He took the opportunity to take part in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , South Korea , before signing a contract with the Boston Bruins that was valid until the end of the season in February 2018 . This was not subsequently renewed, so he declared his active career ended in September 2018 and at the same time returned to the Buffalo Sabers, where he took on a management role.
In 2019, Gionta was honored with the induction into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame .
