The playoffs for the Stanley Cup the year 2003 began on 9 April 2003 and ended on 9 June 2003 with the 4: 3 success of the New Jersey Devils against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim . For the Devils, who provided the top scorers in the playoffs in Jamie Langenbrunner and Scott Niedermayer , it was the third title in the last eight years after 1995 and 2000. The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim made it to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in their franchise history . In addition, their goalkeeper Jean-Sébastien Giguère became only the fifth player in league history to be defeated with his team in the final and still be awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the post-season . The last time Ron Hextall succeeded in doing this was in 1985. In addition, the Stanley Cup final for the third time after 1955 and 1965 only won home wins.

mode

After the three division winners and the five other most points teams have qualified the Conference of each conference, start the knock-out system discharged playoffs . The division winner with the best points meets the eighth and thus the worst qualified team, number 2 of this ranking list meets number 7, etc. This mode allows one or more qualified teams to have more points than one of the division winners. The same principle is used to determine the matches in the second playoff round.

Each conference then plays its winner in the conference quarter-finals, conference semifinals and conference finals, who then compete in the final for the Stanley Cup . All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Eastern Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Western Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

For games that remain tied after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows , which, in contrast to the regular season, is played with five field players. It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .

Stanley Cup winner

The Stanley Cup winner New Jersey Devils traditionally had a total of 54 people, including 25 players and some officials, including the coaching staff and management, engraved on the base of the trophy. Among these were the assistant coaches Bobby Carpenter and John MacLean who had already won the Stanley Cup as players with the Devils in 1995. Her coach at the time, Larry Robinson , who was also a six-time cup winner as a player, was also part of the coaching staff. Among the scouts was Marcel Pronovost , whose name, like Robinson, was engraved on the cup for the eighth time. After five successes as a player, this was the third as a scout. Vladimir Bure, Pawel's father , also managed as a fitness advisor what his son failed to do as a player. The rule for the players is that they should either have played 41 games for the team in the regular season or one game in the final series. But there are always exceptions. No exception was made for Christian Berglund , who had only played 38 games for the Devils.

The 25 players in New Jersey consist of two goalkeepers, eight defenders and 15 attackers, including six Europeans . After 1989 with the Calgary Flames and 1999 with the Dallas Stars , Joe Nieuwendyk won his third Stanley Cup with the third team. Jiří Bicek was the first Slovak to win the cup.
