The playoffs for the Stanley Cup in 1932 began on March 24, 1932 and ended on April 9, 1932 with the 3-0 victory of the Toronto Maple Leafs against the New York Rangers . The Maple Leafs achieved their third title in franchise history and their first under this name, having previously been successful as Toronto Arenas (1918) and Toronto St. Patricks (1922). The Rangers, however, played their first final since 1929 and ensured the penultimate Stanley Cup final, which was partly played on neutral ground; In 1950 this was necessary again. In addition, they had the top scorer of these playoffs in their ranks, Frank Boucher .
mode
The three best teams from each division qualified for the playoffs. The two division winners played one of the two finalists directly in a first semi-final. The four remaining teams faced each other in two quarter-finals, with the two division runners-up and the two division thirds clashing. The quarter-finals finally culminated in the second semi-final, which determined the second finalist. The first semi-final and the Stanley Cup final were played in the best-of-five mode , while the second semi-final series and the two quarter-final series basically played two games. In these only the goal difference to advance was taken into account, so that a draw was also possible.
In series with best-of-five mode, the lower-seeded team had home rights in the first two games before the higher-seeded team played three home games in a row. In series with only two games, each team hosted a home game. It should be noted, however, that there were regular deviations from the distribution of home rights presented for various reasons.
Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) . The quarter-finals and the second semi-finals were excluded from this regulation, all of which could end in a draw and only went into overtime if the goal difference at the end of the second game had not produced a winner.
