The playoffs for the Stanley Cup in 1946 began on March 19, 1946 and ended on April 9, 1946 with the 4-1 victory of the Canadiens de Montréal against the Boston Bruins . The Canadiens won their second title in the last three years and the sixth in their franchise history . They also had the top scorer of the playoffs in their ranks in the person of Elmer Lach . The Bruins, on the other hand, suffered their second consecutive defeat in the final, the last time they were defeated by the Detroit Red Wings in 1943 .

mode

The four best teams in the league qualified for the playoffs. In the semi-finals, the first and third as well as the second and fourth of the final table faced each other. The respective winners then contested the Stanley Cup final.

All series were held in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needed four wins to advance. The higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games.

Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
