The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1961 began on March 21, 1961 and ended on April 16, 1961 with the Chicago Black Hawks' 4-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings . The Black Hawks won their first title since 1938 and at the same time the third title in their franchise history , but also the last title until 2010 . Together with the Red Wings, they formed the first all-American final since 1950 (Detroit vs. New York ), while both teams with Gordie Howe and Pierre Pilote each had a top scorer. In addition, the record series of five consecutive Stanley Cup victories and ten finals of the Canadiens de Montréal ended at the same time . In addition, the playoffs 1961 marked the only year of the original Six era (1942-1967) in which the title holder was not called Montréal, Detroit or Toronto .
mode
The four best teams in the league qualified for the playoffs. In the semi-finals, the first and third as well as the second and fourth of the final table faced each other. The respective winners then contested the Stanley Cup final.
All series were held in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needed four wins to advance. The higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. This usual mode was deviated from in this final, however, with home rights changing continuously from game to game.
Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
