The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1966 began on April 7, 1966 and ended on May 5, 1966 with the Canadiens de Montréal's 4-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings . The Canadiens won their second title in a row and the 14th in their franchise history . The Red Wings, on the other hand, played their fourth final in the last six years and were beaten in all of them. However, they made with their goalkeeper Roger Crozier to the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player of this post-season , which thus became the first player who managed this even though his team lost the final. Although it was only the second award of the trophy, this should remain an exception in the following, so until today (as of: Playoffs 2019) only four other players have become playoff MVPs without winning the Stanley Cup at the same time. In addition, Detroit also had the top scorer of the playoffs in their ranks, Norm Ullman .
mode
The four best teams in the league qualified for the playoffs. In the semi-finals, the first and third as well as the second and fourth of the final table faced each other. The respective winners then contested the Stanley Cup final.
All series were held in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needed four wins to advance. The higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games.
Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
