The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1940 began on March 19, 1940 and ended on April 13, 1940 with the New York Rangers' 4-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs . The Rangers won their third title and their first since 1933 , when they had also prevailed against the Maple Leafs. In addition, they provided Neil Colville and Phil Watson, the two top scorers of these playoffs, while they subsequently needed 54 years for their next success, so that the " Curse of 1940 " ("Curse of 1940") was already mentioned . The Maple Leafs, however, suffered their fifth defeat in their fifth finals in the last six years; only in 1937 they were not involved in the final.
mode
The six best teams in the league qualified for the playoffs. The first two teams in the final table played one of the two finalists directly in a first semi-final. The four remaining teams faced each other in two quarter-finals, with the third on the seeding list meeting fourth and the fifth against sixth. The quarter-finals finally culminated in the second semi-final, which determined the second finalist. The first semi-final and the Stanley Cup final were held in best-of-seven mode , while in the quarter-final series and the second semi-final series, two victories were enough to advance and thus played in best-of-three mode.
In series with a best-of-seven mode, the higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. In series with a best-of-three mode, home rights changed from game to game, so that the higher-ranked team played in front of their home crowd in the first and decisive third game. It should be noted, however, that there were regular deviations from the distribution of home rights presented for various reasons.
Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
