The playoffs for the Stanley Cup the year 2004 began on April 7, 2004 and ended on 7 June 2004 with a 4: 3 win the Tampa Bay Lightning over the Calgary Flames . For the Lightning it was the third playoff and the first final participation and consequently also the first Stanley Cup success in the history of the franchise . In addition, her attacker Brad Richards was honored with the Conn Smythe Trophy as Most Valuable Player of the Playoffs, where he also topped the post-season scorer list . For the Flames it was the first final participation since their Stanley Cup win in 1989. In addition, Calgary qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 1996, so that the fifth longest negative series of seven missed playoffs in a row ended.

mode

After the three division winners and the five other most points teams have qualified the Conference of each conference, start the knock-out system discharged playoffs . The division winner with the best points meets the eighth and thus the worst qualified team, number 2 of this ranking list meets number 7, etc. This mode allows one or more qualified teams to have more points than one of the division winners. The same principle is used to determine the matches in the second playoff round.

Each conference then plays its winner in the conference quarter-finals, conference semifinals and conference finals, who then compete in the final for the Stanley Cup . All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Eastern Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Western Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

For games that remain tied after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows , which, in contrast to the regular season, is played with five field players. It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .

Stanley Cup winner

The Stanley Cup winner Tampa Bay Lightning traditionally had a total of 53 people, including 25 players and some officials, including the coaching staff and management, engraved on the base of the trophy. Among these were assistant coach Craig Ramsay and Bill Barber , who has already won the Stanley Cup twice as a player. For the players, the rule was that they either had to play 41 games for the team in the regular season or one game in the final series. But there are always exceptions, from which Stanislav Neckář and Darren Rumble benefited in this case , both of whom had not played a sufficient number of games.

Tampa's 25 players are made up of two goalkeepers, ten defenders and 13 attackers, including seven Europeans . Ruslan Fedotenko was the first Ukrainian to win the cup. Dave Andreychuk was already in his 23rd NHL season when he won his first Stanley Cup. Hereby he surpassed Ray Bourque , who in 2001 won his first Stanley Cup in his 22nd season.
