The playoffs for the Stanley Cup in 1975 began on April 8, 1975 and ended on May 27, 1975 with the Philadelphia Flyers' 4-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabers . The Flyers won their second title in a row, but at the same time their last (status: Playoffs 2019). In addition, her goalkeeper Bernie Parent won the Conn Smythe Trophy as Most Valuable Player, as in the previous year , becoming the first player to receive this award twice in a row; after him, only Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby have succeeded so far . In addition, Philadelphia in the person of Rick MacLeish was the best scorer this post-season . The defeated Sabers, on the other hand, played their first Stanley Cup final and, together with the Flyers, ensured the first final in league history in which no team from the Original Six took part.

Meanwhile, the New York Islanders succeeded as the second team in NHL history after the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1942 to convert a 3-0 deficit in a series into a 4-3 victory. They almost repeated this success from the quarter-finals against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the subsequent semi-finals, but were defeated in the decisive seventh game to the eventual title holder from Philadelphia. Furthermore, the playoffs in 1975 were accompanied by a significantly changed mode, so from then on twelve instead of eight teams qualified.

mode

The twelve teams qualified for the playoffs were placed on the seeding list according to their performance in the regular season (most points; most wins in the event of a tie). However, the four division winners were set by bye for the quarter-finals, while the remaining eight participants played a preliminary round. In all rounds, the pairings were determined by the seeding list, so the highest seeded team met the lowest seeded team, number two met the penultimate team, etc.

The series of the preliminary round were played in the best-of-three mode, the series in all subsequent rounds in the best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needed four wins to progress from the quarter-finals; only two in the first round. The higher-ranked team had - from the second round - home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. In the preliminary round, however, the home law changed from game to game.

Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
