Stanislav "Stan" Mikita (born May 20, 1940 as Stanislav Guoth in Sokolče , Slovak State ; † August 7, 2018 in Chicago , Illinois , USA ) was a Canadian ice hockey player . The center played a total of over 1,500 games for the Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League between 1959 and 1980 . With the team he won the Stanley Cup in the 1961 playoffs and still holds a number of franchise records , including most games, assists and scorer points. He is widely regarded as one of the best players of his generation, receiving the Art Ross Trophy four times in the 1960s as the NHL's best scorer, while he was honored twice with the Hart Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player in the league. In addition, his high sporting standard and his fairness on the ice were honored twice with the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy . 1983 Mikita was in the Hockey Hall of Fame added, while his jersey number with the Blackhawks 21 blocked is.
Career
Mikita was born Stanislav Guoth in the Slovak state and fled with his parents to Canada in the province of Ontario at the age of eight . There he took his uncle's last name. Mikita spent his junior years in the Ontario Hockey Association with the St. Catharines Teepees , for which he ran up between 1956 and 1959 in a total of 171 games. in his final season with the Teepees, the striker won both the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy and the Red Tilson Trophy as individual awards. However, he could not win a title with the team in the three years, although it was always one of the strongest teams in the league.
At the end of the 1958/59 season , Mikita made her debut in the National Hockey League for the Chicago Black Hawks . He spent his entire career there between 1959 and 1980 - until 1972 together with Bobby Hull . He was known not only for his excellent scoring qualities , which brought him the Art Ross Trophy four times for the best scorer in the league, but also for many penalty minutes. At a young age he exceeded the 100-minute penalty several times. From 1966 he changed his style of play - allegedly inspired by his child's daughter - and received the league's fair play award in 1967 and 1968 with a total of only 26 penalty minutes in both seasons. Born in Slovakia, he celebrated his greatest success by winning the Stanley Cup at the end of the playoffs in 1961 .
Stan Mikita was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame at the same time as Bobby Hull in 1983 , where he also sat on the selection committee, which advises annually on new admissions. In 1976 he was awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy for his services to ice hockey in the United States . In 2002 he was also inducted into the Slovak Hockey Hall of Fame , two years later he was awarded the Order of the White Double Cross 2nd Class - one of the highest awards in Slovakia .
In May 2011, Mikita was diagnosed with oral cancer, which was then treated with external radiation therapy. Four years later, in January 2015, Mikita was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia . He died on August 7, 2018 in his adopted home Chicago at the age of 78.
