The 1963/64 NHL season was the 47th season in the National Hockey League . Six teams played 70 games each. The Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup for the third time in a row after beating the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in the final series. Gordie Howe was the top scorer in the NHL with 545 goals. In the same game as Howe, goalie Terry Sawchuk broke the record with his shutoutNo. 94. The hero of the Finals was Toronto's defender Bob Baun. In game 6 he was hit by the puck and had to be carried off the ice on a stretcher. Baun returned and decided the game in overtime. He also took part in Game 7 (4-0 for Toronto). Afterwards, the x-ray showed a broken ankle.
