The 1958/59 NHL season was the 42nd season in the National Hockey League . Six teams played 70 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Montréal Canadiens after a 4-1 win in the final series against the Toronto Maple Leafs . Nine game days before the end of the season, Punch Imlach took over the Maple Leafs as coach. With him they caught up seven points behind the Rangers and qualified for the playoffs at the last minute.
