The 1956/57 NHL season was the 40th season in the National Hockey League . Six teams played 70 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Montréal Canadiens after a 4-1 win in the final series against the Boston Bruins . Several players, led by Ted Lindsay , Doug Harvey , Jimmy Thomson, and Tod Sloan formed the NHL Players' Association. The league bosses around Conn Smythe and Jack Adams were not thrilled. The oppressive superiority of the Montréal Canadiens in power play led to a rule change. After a power play goal, the penalized player may return to play. Furthermore, it was only allowed to play with single-skate skates.
