Joseph Henri Richard (born February 29, 1936 in Montreal , Québec ; † March 6, 2020 in Laval , Québec) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played 1,436 games for the Canadiens de Montréal in the National Hockey League (NHL) has contested on the position of the center . Richard, whose older brother Maurice is also one of the greatest players in NHL history, is the most successful player in NHL history in this category with eleven Stanley Cup victories between 1956 and 1973 . Between 1971 and 1975 he was the 15th team captain in the Habs franchise history .
Career
After a good junior career with the Nationals de Montréal and Canadien junior de Montréal , the younger brother of Maurice "The Rocket" Richard came to the Canadiens de Montréal in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the 1955/56 season . In reference to his brother, he was quickly nicknamed "Pocket Rocket" .
The team was dominant in the NHL at the time, winning the Stanley Cup five times in a row . In the 1957/58 season he led the NHL with 52 assists. For most years he was among the top ten scorers in the NHL. In the second half of the 1960s, he won the Cup four times with the Canadiens. On the way to the Stanley Cup in 1966 he scored the decisive goal in the last game against the Detroit Red Wings after 2:20 minutes of extra time.
From 1971 he was team captain of his club. He was playing in a row with Claude Larose and Réjean Houle at the time . He has won the Stanley Cup eleven times in his career, more than any other player in the history of the sport.
He always wore the shirt number 16 , which has been blocked by the Habs since 1975 and is no longer awarded. In 1979 he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame . Richard died in March 2020 a few days after his 84th birthday in Laval in his home province of Québec .
