Mark Fitzpatrick (born November 13, 1968 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played for the Los Angeles Kings , New York Islanders , Florida Panthers , Tampa Bay Lightning , Chicago Blackhawks and Carolina Hurricanes in National Hockey from 1988 to 2000 League played.

Career

During his junior years, Fitzpatrick played with Trevor Linden and Wayne Hynes in the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Western Hockey League . Twice, in 1987 and 1988 , they won the Memorial Cup . In the 1987 NHL Entry Draft , the Los Angeles Kings selected him in the second round as 27th.

He played his first professional games for the New Haven Nighthawks in the American Hockey League . At the Kings Glenn Healy and Roland Melanson formed the goalkeeping duo in the 1988/89 season , but Fitzpatrick soon made the jump into the squad. It was also Wayne Gretzky's first season in Los Angeles. The Kings had no patience and wanted quick success. So they gave it to the New York Islanders for Kelly Hrudey . In the 1989/90 season he was number 1 of the Islanders, but shortly before the start of the following season, he fell ill with eosinophilia myalgia syndrome . Since he was able to overcome the illness and play two more games that season, he was awarded the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy . Behind Glenn Healy, who came to the Islanders shortly after him, he fought in the years that followed to match the performance of earlier years.

In the summer of 1993, he joined the Quebec Nordiques , which for Ron Hextall sent to the Islanders. In this swap, two first-round draft rights were exchanged. Quebec used the acquired to sign Adam Deadmarsh , while the Islanders and their Todd Bertuzzi brought. Just four days later, it was the Florida Panthers who selected him in the 1993 NHL Expansion Draft . In Florida John Vanbiesbrouck became the new number 1, together with Fitzpatrick the two formed one of the strongest goalkeeping duos. Together, the two led the Panthers as the first of the teams that had been accepted into the NHL in the 1990s, in the final series of the playoffs 1995/9696 .

In January 1998 he was delivered to the Tampa Bay Lightning together with Jody Hull , who in return sent Dino Ciccarelli and Jeff Norton to the Panters. In Tampa he was the goalkeeper again. However, he was only briefly on the team and was passed on to the Chicago Blackhawks after the season ended for Michal Sýkora . As number 2 behind Jocelyn Thibault , he had little ice age. The next stop was the Carolina Hurricanes , who were looking for a successor to Trevor Kidd . He was supposed to be the back-up for Artūrs Irbe , but Éric Fichaud prevailed here. He only played three games in Carolina. He played for some time in the IHL with the Cincinnati Cyclones and Detroit Vipers . He tried again at the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL. Despite good preparation, the decision was made to go with Bob Essensa . In the summer of 2001 he ended his career.
