Jaromír Jágr (born February 15, 1972 in Kladno , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey player in the position of right winger who has been under contract with HC Kladno from the Czech 1st division since January 2018 .
He is considered one of the best attacking players of all time, won the Stanley Cup twice with the Pittsburgh Penguins (1991 and 1992) and was awarded the Art Ross Trophy as the best scorer of the regular season five times (1995 and 1998-2001). He is also a member of the Triple Gold Club and holds several franchise records with the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers as well as player records in the NHL as a whole.
Career
Jágr began ice skating at the age of three and made his debut for Poldi in the Czechoslovak ice hockey league at the age of 16 .
Pittsburgh Penguins (1990-2001)
During the NHL Entry Draft in 1990 he was selected in the first round in fifth place by the Pittsburgh Penguins , where he then spent eleven years of his NHL career. With the Penguins he won the Stanley Cup in 1991 and 1992 after final wins in the play-offs against the Minnesota North Stars and the Chicago Blackhawks, respectively .
In the following years, Jágr developed into one of the strongest right wingers in the NHL and won the Art Ross Trophy for the first time as the most successful scorer in the league with 70 points in the 1994/95 season . In the following year he exceeded his offensive performance from the previous season and played with 62 goals and 87 assists, the season with the highest points of his professional career to date. At the same time, he set new NHL records for players on the right wing position with these statistics. After Ron Francis left the Penguins following the 1997/98 season, Jágr took over the office of team captain . Between 1998 and 2001, the attacker won the Art Ross Trophy four times in a row as the most attacking player in the league and was also awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as the best player in the NHL in the 1998/99 season . On April 18, 1999, he scored the decisive goal for the 2-1 overtime win against the New York Rangers in the last game of ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky . In addition, the Czech received the Lester B. Pearson Award in 1999 and 2001 , which is given by the players' union to the best actor in the main round.
During the lockout season 1994/95 Jágr played eleven games for his home club HC Kladno , six for HC Bozen and one for the then second-class Schalke Haie . In the game for the Haie he scored one goal and ten assists.
In the course of the 2000/01 season , Jagr was increasingly exposed to criticism due to decreasing performance and his internal team behavior and also had a difficult relationship with Mario Lemieux , who returned before the season and who as a club legend also claimed a role as a leader. Furthermore, due to financial difficulties, the organization was no longer able to continue to pay the high salary of the Czech, which is why Jágr was transferred to the Washington Capitals in July 2001 within the NHL . The Czech played a total of 806 games in the Pittsburgh Penguins 'jersey and, alongside Lemieux and Sidney Crosby, is the only player in the history of the franchise to score more than 1000 points in the Penguins' jersey.

Washington Capitals (2001-2004)
In Washington, Jágr received a seven-year contract with an average annual salary of eleven million US dollars, which made him the highest paid player in the NHL at the time. At the Capitals he immediately received the post of assistant captain, but could not build on the previous performances in Pittsburgh in the following seasons. The 2001/02 season ended the winger with 79 points and missed the play-offs with his team. After the unsuccessful performance of the capital, the management tried in 2003 to transfer Jágr within the league, with his financially strong contract preventing many teams from signing. In January 2004, the Czech was finally handed over to the New York Rangers .
New York Rangers (2004-2008)
With the Rangers he ended the 2003/04 season with 15 hits and 14 assists, but missed the play-offs twice in a row across clubs for the first time in his NHL career. During the lockout in the 2004/05 season , Jágr moved to his home club HC Kladno , before he accepted a lucrative offer from HK Awangard Omsk from Russia in November 2004 and was able to win the IIHF European Champions Cup with the team in 2005 .
For the 2005/06 season he returned to the New York Rangers and was able to tie in with his performances for the first time on the offensive seasons at Pittsburgh. During the season he overtook Stan Mikita as the highest point European in the history of the NHL and, with his 53rd goal of the season in the game against the Boston Bruins in April 2006, replaced the previous record holder Adam Graves as the player with the most goals within a season in the New York jersey Rangers. After Jagr led the league as the top scorer for much of the season, he ended the season with 54 goals and 69 assists and had to admit defeat to Joe Thornton for the Art Ross Trophy as the best point player and Jonathan Cheechoo for the Maurice Richard Trophy as the top scorer. Following the season, however, he received the Lester B. Pearson Award for the third time as most valuable player in the main round. With his offensive performance, Jagr contributed significantly to the surprising play-off qualification of the Rangers, but where they were eliminated in the first round against the New Jersey Devils.
For the 2006/07 season , Jágr took over the position of team captain of the New York Rangers, which had been vacant since the resignation of Mark Messier in 2004. In the opening game of the Rangers against the Washington Capitals on October 5, 2006, Jágr scored the first goal of the 2006/07 season 29 seconds after kick-off. In the game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on November 19, he was the 16th player in NHL history to reach the 600-goal mark. He scored his 602nd NHL goal on November 21, 2006 and has been the best European shooter in NHL history ever since.
Awangard Omsk (2008-2011)
After Jágr received no new contract with the Rangers following the 2007/08 season , he left the NHL and moved to the newly founded Continental Hockey League for the Russian club Awangard Omsk . During the game against HK Vitjas in October 2008, Jágr spoke to his teammate Alexei Tscherepanow on the exchange bench just before he collapsed next to him and died a little later. In January 2009 the Czech was named the new team captain at Omsk. During the summer break, Jágr initially publicly expressed interest in returning to the NHL, but extended his contract in Omsk for the following 2010/11 season .
Return to the NHL (2011-2018)
In July 2011 he returned to the NHL and signed a one-year contract with a rumored salary of 3.3 million US dollars with the Philadelphia Flyers , where he was in the first row alongside Claude Giroux as well as in the subsequent 2011/12 season Scott Hartnell played. The Czech acted as one of the assistant captains and recorded a total of 54 scorer points in 73 games. In the summer of 2012 Jagr moved within the league to the Dallas Stars and thus played for the first time for a team from the Western Conference . For the duration of the lockout at the beginning of the 2012/13 season , he was initially on the ice for his home club HC Kladno in the Extraliga, marking 57 scorer points in 34 games. Then Jagr returned to Dallas and scored in February 2013 in the 3-2 victory of his Dallas Stars over the Edmonton Oilers the game -winning goal in overtime and set a new NHL record with this 17th overtime goal of his career . Two months later he was transferred to league rivals Boston Bruins and scored on his debut for the Bruins the game-winning goal in the 1-0 win against the New Jersey Devils . With his team, the attacker reached the Stanley Cup final in the play-offs and is the player with the greatest time gap between appearances in final series in the NHL. After the final defeat against the Chicago Blackhawks , the Bruins announced that they did not want to extend the contract with Jágr.

In the summer of 2013, Jágr was hired by the New Jersey Devils and was supposed to help compensate for the departure of Ilya Kovalchuk . In December 2013 he scored the 122nd winning goal of his NHL career in the game against the Ottawa Senators, overtaking the previous record holder Gordie Howe . The left-handed shooter finished the 2013/14 season with 67 points from 82 games, making him the player with the highest points within the team. Due to his good offensive performance, Jágr received a one-year contract extension in New Jersey. On January 3, 2015, he scored a hat trick in the Devils' 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers and became the oldest player to do so in the NHL at 42 years and 322 days.
In February 2015, the Devils handed him over to the Florida Panthers and in return received a second-round vote for the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and a performance-based vote for the third round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft . Jágr had forced a change beforehand, as he was not satisfied with his working times since Peter DeBoer was fired . After the end of the 2014/15 season , in which the Panthers narrowly missed the playoffs, Jágr extended his contract in Florida by one year. Before that, when he was 43 years old, when asked whether he still had strength for another year, he said that he “still had strength for seven more years.” In the following season 2015/16 , Jágr won the Atlantic Division with the Panthers , where he was the team's best scorer with 66 points, and subsequently failed in the first round of playoffs at the New York Islanders . In May 2016 it was announced that the Czech had decided to extend the contract by another year. In addition, after the 2015/16 season he was honored with the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for perseverance, dedication and fairness in all aspects of ice hockey.
After the 2016/17 season, his expiring contract in Florida was not extended, so he was now looking for a new employer as a free agent . In early October 2017, he finally signed a one-year contract with the Calgary Flames . On November 7, 2017, he completed his 1,925 NHL game, surpassing Gordie Howe's mark and is now in second place behind Mark Messier , who appeared a total of 1,992 times in the NHL.
By the end of January 2018, due to injuries, among other things, Jágr had only played just under half (22) of the competitive games for the Flames, so he returned to HC Kladno to play there. Officially, his NHL contract in Calgary remained valid, but this is considered the final end of his NHL career.
At the age of 47, he played a decisive role in the return of HC Kladno to the Czech premier league in spring 2019 and scored all of his team's goals in the decisive 4-2 win against HC České Budějovice .
International
With the Czech national ice hockey team Jágr won the gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano , and in 2005 and 2010 the ice hockey world championship . At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , he was able to win the bronze medal with the team. On February 27, 2006, Jágr announced his resignation from the national team. At the men's ice hockey world championship in Switzerland in 2009 he made his comeback in the jersey of the Czech team and won the gold medal at the 2010 world championship . At the 2011 World Cup , Jágr won the bronze medal with the Czech team.
