The 1988/89 season of the 1st division was the 46th regular staging of the top ice hockey division in Czechoslovakia . In the playoff final, Tesla Pardubice prevailed with 3-1 wins against Dukla Trenčín and thus won the third Czechoslovak championship title in the club's history. Slovan CHZJD Bratislava did not manage to stay in the league qualification and was relegated to the 2nd division , while Zetor Brno managed to get back up after a year in the second division.

mode

As in the previous season, the league was played with twelve teams. The total number of games per team in the main round was 34 games. Then the eight best-placed teams qualified for the playoffs and played the champions there. The other four teams competed against each other in a round of relegation, and the two worst-placed teams among these had to play against the four best second division clubs for relegation or promotion.

1st league qualification

The two best teams of the Czech and Slovak 2nd division group competed in the 1st division qualification against the last two teams in the 1st division. Each team played against each other on a return game basis. The two best-placed teams were allowed to compete in the first division in the next season. The Czech representatives Zetor Brno and Poldi SONP Kladno prevailed.
