The 1979/80 season of the first division was the 37th regular staging of the top ice hockey division in Czechoslovakia . Poldi SONP Kladno prevailed with 71 points . For the team it was their sixth Czechoslovak championship title .

As in the previous season, the league was played with twelve teams. Since each team played two home and two away games against each group opponent, the total number of games per team was 44 games. Champion became the winner of the main round. The bottom of the table was relegated directly to the respective national championship.
