The 1978/79 season of the 1st division was the 36th regular staging of the top ice hockey division in Czechoslovakia . With 27 wins and six draws on 44 match days, the Slovan CHZJD Bratislava prevailed and won the first Czechoslovak championship title in the club's history. The TJ Gottwaldov rose to the second division, the 1st ČNHL .

As in the previous season, the league was played with twelve teams. Since each team played two home and two away games against each group opponent, the total number of games per team was 44 games. The last placed in the table was relegated to the respective state championship.

Vladimír Martinec is the only player to have played more than 44 games as he moved to another club after Matchday 21. He officially played for Dukla Jihlava until November 30th, but since Tesla Pardubice had to play an early game of the 26th matchday before that date, Martinec was already used in this.

The top scorer in the league was Vladimír Martinec, who scored 42 goals in a total of 45 games. The top scorer was the Slovak Marián Šťastný , who collected 74 points in 40 games.
