The 1980/81 season of the 1st division was the 38th regular staging of the top ice hockey division in Czechoslovakia . TJ Vítkovice prevailed with 68 points . For the team it was their second Czechoslovak championship title . Slovan CHZJD Bratislava had to relegate to the second division as bottom of the table.

mode

As in the previous season, the league was played with twelve teams. Since each team played two home and two away games against each group opponent, the total number of games per team was 44 games. Champion became the winner of the main round. The bottom of the table was relegated directly to the respective national championship. For the first time in the history of the 1st division, ties were abolished and replaced by an extension with a possible subsequent penalty shootout .

The top scorer in the league was Jiří Lála from Dukla Jihlava, who scored 40 goals in his team's 44 games. Top scorer was Milan Nový from Poldi SONP Kladno with 32 goals and 48 assists in 44 games.
