The 1989/90 season of the 1st division was the 47th regular staging of the top ice hockey division in Czechoslovakia . In the playoff final, Sparta ČKD Prague prevailed with 3-1 wins against Dukla Trenčín and thus won the third Czechoslovak championship title . Zetor Brno was relegated to the second division after a year in the first division, while Slovan CHZJD Bratislava , DS Olomouc and Plastika Nitra made it to the first division.

As in the previous season, the league was played with twelve teams. The total number of games per team in the main round was 44 games. Then the eight best-placed teams qualified for the playoffs and played the champions there. The last two teams competed in the relegation round against the four best second division teams.

Qualification for the 1st league

The two best teams in the shared second division, the Czech 1. ČNHL and the Slovak 1. SNHL , competed in qualification against the last two in the first division. Each team played against each other on a return game basis. The best four teams were allowed to compete in the first division in the next season, as this was increased to 14 teams. The Czech representatives Tesla Pardubice and DS Olomouc, as well as the Slovak representatives Slovan CHZJD Bratislava and Plastika Nitra prevailed, while Zetor Brno was relegated to the 1st ČNHL.
