Otakar Janecký (born December 26, 1960 in Pardubice , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player who played for SaiPa Lappeenranta , Jokerit Helsinki and the Espoo Blues in the SM-liiga during his active time from 1978 to 2004 . His son Otakar Janecký junior was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Otakar Janecký began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Tesla Pardubice . For Tesla's professional team he was active from 1979 to 1990 in the first division , the highest Czechoslovak division. With Tesla he won the Czechoslovak championship in the 1986/87 and 1988/89 seasons . When he won the second title in 1989, he was the best assists in the league with 41 assists. For the 1990/91 season the center went to other European countries, where he received a contract with SaiPa Lappeenranta in the Finnish SM-liiga . There he was able to convince right away and reached 60 points in 44 games, 21 of which were goals, which was the best points season of his career for him. He was involved in more than one out of three goals for his team. SaiPa himself was one of the weaker teams in the league and so he had to accept relegation to the second class I divisionna with his team as bottom of the table .
In the summer of 1991 Janecký therefore moved within the SM-liiga to the Finnish top club Jokerit Helsinki . In 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1997 he won four Finnish championships within six years with the capital city club . In addition, he failed with his team in the 1994/95 season in the playoff final at TPS Turku . At European level he took third place in the European Cup with Jokerit in 1992/93 . In 1995 and 1996 he won this competition with the Finns twice in a row. The time at Jokerit was also very successful for the Czech himself. In the first championship title with Jokerit in the 1991/92 season , he was the best assists in the playoffs with eleven assists, and he was also elected to the league's all-star team. In the following season he prepared 43 goals, making him the best assists in the league. He was also voted the best player in the main round. To win the title in the 1996/97 season he contributed in the playoffs with two goals and 13 assists in nine games, for which he received the Jari Kurri trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs. In November 1995 and December 1998 he was each player of the month in the SM-liiga.
The 1999/2000 season spent Janecký with the Espoo Blues . Then the now 39-year-old two-time Olympian returned to his Czech homeland and signed a contract with his ex-club from Pardubice, which had since changed its name to HC Pardubice. In the first three seasons after his return, he was team captain at HC Pardubice and reached the playoff final with his team in the 2002/03 season . In this he lost to HC Slavia Prague with Pardubice . In the 2003/04 season , the left shooter was replaced by Michal Sýkora as captain. During the season he retired from competitive sports after differences with the coach and devoted himself to coaching the club's juniors.
In his honor, Jokerit, for which he scored exactly 355 points in 355 SM-liiga games, no longer awards his jersey number 91 to other players. In the summer of 2006, he ended his career with a farewell game, in which his jersey number was also blocked by HC Pardubice and was symbolically hung under the roof.
International
For Czechoslovakia Janecký took part in the World Championships in 1989 and 1992 , and the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville . At the World Cup 1989, he won a bronze medal with his team, as well as at the Olympic Winter Games in 1992. He also was in the squad of the Czech national team at the world championships in 1993 and 1994 , and the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer . His greatest success with the Czech national team was winning the bronze medal at the 1993 World Cup.
In total, he played 21 goals in 110 competitive games for both national teams and provided over 20 assists (ČSSR - 79 games, 17 goals; Czech Republic - 31 games, 4 goals).
