The 1985/86 season of the 1st division was the 43rd regular staging of the top ice hockey division in Czechoslovakia . In the playoff final VSŽ Košice prevailed with 3-2 victories against Dukla Jihlava and won the first Czechoslovak championship title in the club's history. Poldi SONP Kladno rose as the bottom of the table of the relegation round in the second division, while the TJ Vítovice rose from this to the first division.

mode

As in the previous season, the league was played with twelve teams. However, playoffs for the championship were reintroduced. The total number of games per team in the main round was 34 games. Then the eight best-placed teams qualified for the playoffs and played the champions there. The other four teams competed in four games against each other in a relegation round, and the bottom of the table had to relegate directly to the respective national championship.

1st league qualification

The winners of the Czech and Slovak 2nd division groups competed against each other in a best-of-five series for promotion to the 1st division for the following season. The Czech representative TJ Vítkovice prevailed.
