The 1990/91 season of the 1st division was the 48th regular staging of the top ice hockey division in Czechoslovakia . In the playoff final, the army sports club Dukla Jihlava prevailed with 3-1 victories against CHZ Litvínov and won the twelfth Czechoslovak championship . The AC Nitra and Motor České Budějovice dismounted in the second league, while the ŠKP PS Poprad and Zetor Brno ascended as the respective national champions directly into the first league.

Compared to the previous season, the league was increased to 14 teams. Each team played each other four times. The total number of games per team in the main round was therefore 52 games. Then the four best-placed teams qualified for the playoffs and played the champions there. The last two teams were relegated directly to the respective state championship.
