Richard Žemlička (born April 13, 1964 in Prague , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player who was under contract with HC Sparta Prague for many years . In 15 seasons for Sparta, he completed 634 games in which he scored 565 points scorer. Since 2009 he has been working as a coach for HC Berounští Medvědi .
Career
Richard Žemlička began his career in the offspring of Sparta Prague before making his debut in the Czechoslovak first division during the 1986/87 season. Richard Žemlička was selected during the NHL Entry Draft in 1990 in the ninth round in 185th place by the Edmonton Oilers , but played for his home club until 1992. He then moved to TPS Turku in the Finnish first division , before running into the ice hockey Bundesliga for EHC Freiburg in the 1992/93 season. This was followed by two seasons with Eisbären Berlin before returning to HC Sparta Prague in 1995.
With Sparta he was Czech champion in 2000 and 2002 . After the 2002/03 season was not very successful, he decided to move to HC Litvínov . Another year later he moved to the Slovak extra league for HK Poprad , where he ended his career in the spring of 2006.
After his retirement he works as a youth coach at Sparta Prague. In October 2008 his jersey number 13 was blocked by HC Sparta Prague and symbolically hung under the ceiling of the Tesla Arena as a banner .
Since the beginning of the 2009/10 season, Žemlička has been the coach of HC Berounští Medvědi , which plays in the first division and has been the farm team of HC Sparta Prague since summer 2009.
International
Richard Žemlička represented the Czechoslovak Federation at the 1992 Winter Olympics , the 1991 Canada Cup and the 1991 and 1992 World Championships. From 1993 he represented the Czech Republic at the 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1997 World Championships.
