The Canada Cup 1991 ( French Coupe Canada 1991 ) was the fifth edition of the competition of the same name . It was held from August 31 to September 16, 1991 in the North American cities of Chicago , Detroit , Hamilton , Montréal , Pittsburgh , Québec , Saskatoon and Toronto . The International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF , the North American Professional League National Hockey League and the Canadian Ice Hockey Association Canadian Hockey Association supported the competition.

Six teams took part in the fifth edition of the competition. With the fall of the Iron Curtain and the dissolution of the Soviet Union , the competition lost a lot of prestige. Canada won the tournament by beating the United States twice in the final series . The best scorer of the tournament was the Canadian Wayne Gretzky with four goals and twelve points. His compatriot Bill Ranford was voted Most Valuable Player .

mode

The six teams played the placements in the preliminary round in a single round, so that each team played five games. There were two points for a win, and one point each for a draw. The four teams with the highest points in the group of six qualified for the semi-finals.

The two semi-finals were decided in the knockout system , the winners of the semi-finals moved into the final. In contrast - as in 1976 , 1984 and 1987 - the final was played in the "best-of-three" mode.
